Pressure Mounts On Rep George Santos

US

Senate Republicans have added to the rising pressure on Rep George Santos (R-NY) after a public spat between Santos and Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) before President Biden's State of the Union speech.

  • Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AL): “I am surprised that the man has not resigned, and I think it just speaks to his own lack of self-awareness."
  • House Democrats yesterday introduced a resolution to expel Santos from Congress due to numerous personal and professional fabrications and allegations of financial misconduct.
  • Rep. Daniel Goldman (D-NY): “This is not just a simple liar. This is a conman who does not belong in Congress, and he needs to go.”
  • The bill has little chance of reaching the House floor for a vote but maintains pressure on Santos who continues to be a significant headache for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) but remains critical to McCarthy's razor thin four-seat majority in the House
  • If pressure continues to increase from leading Republicans it is hard to see McCarthy continuing to shield Santos. His removal from Congress would precipitate a special election which would likely flip the seat back to Democrats.
