Prime Minister Bennett Will Not Run In Next Election

ISRAEL

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has told members of his Yamina political alliance that he has decided not to run in the next election.

  • Anna Ahronheim at Jerusalem Post writes: "He will remain in post as Alternate Prime Minister of Israel until new government is formed."
  • Bennett is expected to issue a statement at 13:00 ET 18:00 BST.
  • Erez Linn at Hayom: "Prime Minister Naftali Bennett will not stand for reelection as an MK in the upcoming elections. He will continue to serve as alternate prime minister (effectively second in command) starting tonight (when Lapid takes over) until a new government is sworn in."
  • Rafi Berg at the BBC says the new arrangement "creates an opening for Israel's longest-serving prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to return to office despite being on trial on corruption charges which he denies."
