Prime Minister Resigns After Just Four Days In Office

PERU

Peruvian Prime Minister Héctor Valer confirmed his resignation just four days after taking office, following allegations that he committed domestic abuse against his daughter and late wife. Valer denied the accusations, but nonetheless handed in his resignation.

  • The Premier's statement came after President Castillo announced Friday that a Cabinet reshuffle was forthcoming, but refrained from clarifying if Valer would be dismissed.
  • Valer's administration faced criticism from day one, owing to some controversial ministerial nominations. These included an Environment Minister without any experience in environmental matters or public management.
  • La República circculated a source report pointing to the importance of an informal group of President Castillo's aides (so called "shadow Cabinet") in successfully lobbying for Héctor Valer's appointment.
  • Castillo will now pick his fourth Cabinet in just six months, as he is struggling to put an end to the dragged-out political turmoil, which has prevented him from focusing on implementing key campaign pledges.
