Pro-EU Coalition Declares Tusk Its PM Candidate Backed By Stable Majority In Parliament

POLAND

Civic Coalition leader Donald Tusk begins his joint media briefing with Third Way co-leaders Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz and Szymon Holownia and the Left's Wlodzimierz Czarzasty by thanking his colleagues for a declaration that the pro-EU bloc is ready to form a new majority in parliament - a message which will be delivered to the President during the upcoming consultations.

  • Tusk confirms that he will be the three-party coalition's candidate for the position of Prime Minister. He says that this has been agreed by the leaders, who will communicate the plan to President Andrzej Duda.
  • Tusk reiterates his call on Duda to facilitate the formation of the new government backed by a majority in parliament and expresses hope for "constructive cooperation" with the head of state.
  • Third Way's Kosiniak-Kamysz and Holownia double down on the call on Duda to ask Tusk to form government as soon as possible instead of delaying the process, citing a strong popular mandate handed to the pro-EU coalition in the recent election.
  • The Left's Czarzasty thanks for "responsible" negotiations, reaffirms support for Tusk's PM bid, adding that his political camp will pres for the implementation of its policy agenda by the incoming government.
  • The leaders suggest that the coalition will soon unveil their candidates for Sejm and Senate Speakers as well as other senior political appointments.
