Productivity Continued Its Sour Trend In Q3

CANADA DATA
  • Landing ahead of the BoC decision at the top of the hour (due a single page statement), labor productivity continued its dire trend with a -0.8% Q/Q (cons -0.6) or -3.5% annualized decline in Q3.
  • The only good news was that Q2 was revised from -0.6% to -0.1% Q/Q, or -0.5% annualized, as part of some far-reaching revisions.
  • Productivity levels are now 1.5% below where they were ahead of the pandemic, in firm contrast to the US where they are 6% higher.
  • Whilst coming too soon to realistically be of influence in today’s decision, it nevertheless adds a hawkish angle considering wage growth has been stuck at the higher end of its 4-5% range in monthly labour reports.
