Putin, Netanyahu Hold Phone Call Amid Rising Tensions

  • Vladimir Putin and Benjamin Netanyahu spoke at length on Sunday as tensions between the two leaders mount over the Israel-Hamas war and Russia’s growing ties with Iran, Bloomberg report. In a 50-minute call, Netanyahu “strongly criticized the dangerous cooperation between Russia and Iran” and “expressed his displeasure” with Moscow taking sides against Israel at the United Nations and other international bodies, according to a statement from the prime minister’s office.
  • Wealthy Russians have maintained high demand for physical gold bars in 2023 even as prices increased, Vedomosti newspaper reported, citing data it collected from lenders.
  • Wholesale fuel prices fell 14-15% in a month due to seasonal demand reduction, high production volumes and export embargo, Kommersant report.
  • Looking ahead, GDP data is on the docket on Wednesday ahead of the CBR key rate decision on Friday where analysts remain split over whether the central bank will continue its hiking cycle or hold rates at 15% following a 200bp rate increase in October.
