Putin Speech Expected To Open 'Victory Day' In Moscow

RUSSIA

Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to open Moscow's Victory Day celebrations on Monday May 9 with a speech, the contents of which has been subject to intense speculation this week.

  • Putin traditionally opens the Victory Day at the Red Square with a keynote speech and Russian state broadcaster Rossiya 1 has the Red Square parade telecast starting at 10:00 MST 08:00 BST 03:00 ET.
  • British Defense Minister Ben Wallace warned this week that Putin may use May 9 to 'press for the mass mobilization of the Russian people.'
  • FP's Jack Detsch citing UK Defense Intel today: 'Russia’s renewed effort to capture Mariupol’s Azovstal steel plant is “likely” linked to Putin’s desire to have symbolic success in Ukraine by May 9 ‘Victory Day.'
  • The US State Department, Pentagon, and White House have refused to be drawn on whether or not the speech will be used to issue a formal declaration of war on Ukraine.
  • German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will also deliver a speech on May 8 (VE Day) and said today that 'this year is a very special 8th of May because of Russia's war against Ukraine.'
