RUSSIA: Putin Talks On US Relations, Ukraine, Energy Prices

RUSSIA

On a visit to Moscow State University, President Vladimir Putin speaks on the prospect of talking with - or even meeting - US President Donald Trump, on the war in Ukraine, and global energy situation.

  • Putin: "Russia has never refused to have contacts with the US. And it is not our fault that the previous administration refused these contacts...I have had a business-like, pragmatic relationship with Trump."
  • Putin: "We ready for talks on Ukraine...There are still issues, such as Kyiv's ban on talks." Claims that "if talks start they would be illegitimate...Kyiv is not in a hurry to lift the ban."
  • On oil prices: "What is [similar about] the Russian and American economies? We are not only among the largest producers of energy resources, but we are also their largest consumers. This means that for both our and the American economies, too high prices are bad, because we need to produce domestically. [...]. And too low prices are also very bad, because this undermines the investment opportunities of energy companies,"
  • On US sanctions threat: "I doubt that Trump will take such a decision, which is harmful for the US economy." Says that "its better to meet up, but it depends on the decisions and choices of the US administration".

Speculation on a Putin-Trump call/meeting continues amid a major Ukrainian drone assault overnight on Russian targets, including an oil refinery and pumping station in the Ryazan region to the southeast of Moscow.
