Pyongyang May Have Fired ICBM Today

NORTH KOREA

North Korea likely test-launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) and a short-range ballistic missile today, Jiji reports citing South Korean authorities.

  • In the recent days, the U.S. and its regional allies warned that Pyongyang was on the cusp of a major missile test, such as an ICBM launch or a nuclear drill.
  • Note that Japan's Defence Minister Kishi earlier suggested that the trajectories of projectiles fired by North Korea were not reminiscent of those characteristic for ICBMs.
  • A confirmed test of an ICBM capable of reaching U.S. territory on the heels of President Biden's visit to Japan and South Korea would represent a major provocation.
  • North Korea last test-fired an ICBM in March during the first such drill since 2017. The second launch in a relatively narrow time window is testament to the DPRK's heightened activity on that front.
