FED
FED: Q&A concludes with final question:
Q: What do you say to savers hurt by low interest rates etc. And can you give us
a clue on how long rates will be near zero?
- A: Low rates affect the economy through a number of channels... For those who
are just relying on savings accounts, not going to benefit from low rates. But
overall, low rates support employment, economic activity. For the overall good,
low rates are a good thing.
- Re how long at zero: Don't want to speculate, will be kept where they are
until we are confident the economy has weathered the effects of the outbrea. We
are not changing that guidance today, but we are going to be very patient, not
in any hurry to raise rates.
