Qatar Offering Shorter LNG Contracts Amid Competition from US

LNG

Qatar is offering shorter and cheaper LNG contracts amid rising competition with the US to secure contracts to supply customers from the new NFE/NFS expansion.

  • Qatar is aiming to be more accommodating to the needs of customers, particularly emerging nations in Asia according to Bloomberg sources.
  • A deal with Petrobangla last week included more lenient payment deadlines than typically offered. The contract size of 1.8mtpa is in line with the average size of Qatari LNG exports contracts but the duration of 15 years is much shorter than typical contracts longer than 20 years.
  • Qatar is already among the world's top LNG exporters and is on track to increase LNG capacity from 77mtpa to 127mtpa from the North Field Expansion projects.
  • Qatar has so far only signed long-term deals for a fraction of the future supplies with 4mtpa with Sinopec and 2mtpa with ConocoPhillips. QatarEnergy is looking add new supply contracts by year-end but is competing with flexible contracts offered by US exporters.
  • Buyers in China, India, Taiwan and Pakistan are currently in talks with Qatar for more supply.
