Appointments to new PM Rishi Sunak's first Cabinet coming thick and fast now. Dominic Raab, a key Sunak supporter during his summer leadership campaign against Liz Truss, returns to a previous ministerial post as Justice Secretary as well as Deputy PM.
- Sunak reappoints James Cleverly as Foreign Secretary. Rumours that the post would go to Penny Mordaunt in exchange for her dropping out of the leadership race, but not to be.
- Ben Wallace is retained as Defence Secretary. Has strong international presence since Russian invasion of Ukraine, and well-supported by party grassroots. Could be signal Sunak intends to keep to 3% of GDP on defence commitment.
- Simon Hart becomes chief whip. Jessica Elgot at The Guardian describes Hart as, "Hugely well-liked across the party and a key organiser in the Brexit years trying to find common ground across the warring sides of the party." Could be crucial in bringing the party together in coming weeks and months.
- Other figures tipped for jobs include Michael Gove, who could return to the Leveling Up brief, Suella Braverman, Nadhim Zahawi, Grant Shapps, Mel Stride and Oliver Dowden.
