Ramaphosa Announces Public Holiday In December

  • The Daily Maverick ran a piece summing up three recent opinion polls released over the past two weeks, all of which showed that support for the ruling African National Congress (ANC) eroded. Voters blame the party for its poor handling of loadshedding, cost-of-living crisis and unemployment. As a reminder, the next general election will be held between May and August 2024.
  • The main opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) said it would not support a "raid on the Reserve Bank," fanning speculation that Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana could consider using government reserves to plug South Africa's fiscal hole. Godongwana had previously warned that without taking any action, the government would run out of cash by March 2024.
  • President Cyril Ramaphosa declared December 15 a public holiday after the national team defeated New Zealand in the Rugby World Cup final, confirming earlier rumours. News24 commented that Ramaphosa's address was effectively an "election speech," focusing on the government's successes over the past couple of years, followed by the announcement of a holiday.
