- President Cyril Ramaphosa said that the rolling blackouts haunting South Africa are "regrettable" and called for more "urgency and speed" in the implementation of the national energy plan, while opposition leader John Steenhuisen asked to meet with the President to discuss the electricity crisis. On Thursday, South Africa's energy regulator NERSA approved an 18.65% electricity tariff hike this year, the largest in more than a decade but less than the 32% requested by the indebted power utility. Eskom's spokesman said the utility would not comment on NERSA's decision.
- Reuters reported this morning that South Africa's ANC party resolved at its national elective conference that monetary policy should be implemented "in a balanced manner, taking into account growth, employment and exchange rate factors." The resolution seen by the news wire did not propose changing the SARB's constitutional mandate, a prospect which has applied pressure to South African assets in the past few days, as senior ANC officials toyed with the idea of broadening the central bank's remit.
- Thursday saw spot USD/ZAR print its worst levels since August and close under its 200-DMA for the first time since April, coming under pressure from in-line U.S. CPI data and comments from Fed's Harker.
