Ramaphosa Says Gov't Has No Plan To Cut Ties With Israel, S. Africa Observes Holiday

  • President Cyril Ramaphosa told the South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD) that Pretoria is not planning to cut diplomatic ties with Israel and criticised instances of anti-Semitic behaviour, while also denouncing Islamophobia and condemning the "genocide" in Gaza. His comments seemed to defy a parliamentary resolution calling on the government to sever relations with Israel.
  • The Reconciliation Barometer survey showed that at least 70% of South Africans intend to vote in next year's elections, but public confidence in political leaders and public institutions is at all-time lows.
  • Loadshedding remains suspended due to the improvement in available generating capacity, with Eskom due to communicate should any changes occur.
