Ramaphosa To Respond To SONA Debate, War Games With Russia & China Start Tomorrow

His decision to declare a state of disaster over the ongoing energy crisis during the SONA has prompted several groups to take legal action, but Ramaphosa has since announced another state of disaster over widespread flooding.   • Russian Admiral Gorshkov frigate armed with Zircon hypersonic missiles has docked in Cape Town ahead of South Africa's controversial naval drills with Russia and China, which will overlap with the anniversary of Moscow's full-scale attack on Ukraine. The exercises will take place on February 17-27 and are likely to weigh on South Africa's diplomatic relations with Western nations, some of whom top the list of its trading partners.
  • Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis of the main opposition Democratic Alliance party told the Mail & Guardian that DA could work with the ruling African National Congress if it fails to secure an outright majority in the wake of the 2024 elections. Hill-Lewis said it would be "very silly" not to consider a coalition with the ANC, as the far-left Economic Freedom Fighters party needs to be kept out of power.
