SECURITY

Rep Jim Hines (D-CT), the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, has told reporters - Erik Wasson of Bloomberg and Mychell Scnnell of the Hill - that, "people should not panic, that is unequivocal” after a statement from House Intelligence Committe Chair Mike Turner (R-OH) today warned of an unspecified national security threat.

  • Hines added: “It’s something that the Congress and the administration does need to address in the medium to long run... It’s a serious issue that Mike is right to focus on but… it’s not gonna ruin your Thursday.”
  • CNN reports on X that the threat is a "highly concerning and destabilizing" Russian capability.
  • White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivantold reporters a short time ago that he will meet with heads on the House Intelligence and Armed Services Committees tomorrow but declined to elaborate on the nature of the threat or confirm if he called the meeting to discuss the threat referred to by Turner.
  • NBC reports that, "A U.S. official confirmed that the Thursday briefing [with Sullivan] is related to the threat highlighted by Turner."
  • NBC also notes that, "Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Mark Warner, D-Va., and its ranking member, Marco Rubio, R-Fla., were briefed weeks ago on the national security threat identified by Turner, according to two sources with direct knowledge.
