--Davis To Tell Commons Bill Will Avoid Brexit Cliff Edge
Repeats Story Initially Transmitted at 21:30 GMT Sep 6/16:30 EST Sep 6
LONDON (MNI) - Brexit returns to the floor of Parliament Thursday, when the
House of Commons gives a Second Reading to the European Union (Withdrawal) Bill.
The bill, known also as the Repeal Bill, will see the full body of EU law
pass into UK law on the day the UK leaves the bloc.
David Davis, Secretary of State for Exiting the EU, will lead the debate
for the Government and is expected to invite MPs 'on all sides' of the House to
work with him to deliver the legislation ensuring the UK statute book will be
fully prepared for exit day.
Parliamentarians on all sides have shown concern that the Bill appears to
be a government 'power grab' in many areas, but Davis is set to welcome the
scrutiny and debate that the Bill will receive as it has its Second Reading in
the House of Commons.
"We have acted responsibly in leaving the EU by prioritising, first and
foremost, a functioning statute book. In bringing forward this Bill, we are
ensuring the smoothest possible exit from the EU -- an exit that enables the
continued stability of the UK's legal system, and maximises certainty for
business, consumers and individuals across the UK," Davis is expected to say
from the Dispatch Box.
He will also attempt to underline the government's position on the
continuation of all rights under EU Law -- at least initially -- with the body
encompassed into UK law.
"We are not rejecting EU law, but embracing the work done between member
states in over forty years of membership and using that solid foundation to
build on in the future, once we return to being masters of our own laws," Davis
will say.
"I hope everyone in this House recognises this Bill's essential nature --
it is the foundation upon which we will legislate for years to come -- and I
look forward to working with the whole House to deliver the Bill," he will add.
The Repeal Bill had its first reading in the Commons on July 13. The Second
Reading debate will conclude with votes on Sep 11.
