Iran's reformist Etemad News reportingthat Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi will travel to Saudi Arabia on Sunday 12 November to take part in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) summit taking place there. This would mark the first visit to Saudi Arabia by an Iranian president since Mahmoud Ahmadinejad met with the late King Abdullah in 2007.
- While Raisi's visit has not been confirmed by either side, and therefore should not be seen as a certainty, it would not be a significant surprise. Iran and Saudi have experienced an improvement in bilateral relations in recent months following a China-brokered resumption in diplomatic ties.
- The Israel-Gaza war is one of the few areas of agreement in foreign policy for both Tehran and Riyadh, with both calling for an immediate ceasefire (although Iran's close ties to Hamas and Hezbollah mean the validity of gov't pronouncements are immediately refuted by Israel and its allies).
- Raisi and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman held their first phone call in October, with any attendance by the Iranian president likely to result in a first in-person meeting.
