Resolution On Hungarian LGBT Law Approved 459 To 147

EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT

MEPs have approved a resolution calling for the Hungarian gov't to withdraw of a law that opponents claim discriminates against those in the LGBT community. The resolution calls for the large majority of EU payments to Hungary to be withheld if the law is not scrapped by PM Viktor Orban's gov't.

  • The plenary session of the European Parliament approved the resolution with 459 votes in favour, 147 against, with 58 abstentions.
  • MEPs are also calling on the Council to invoke the provisions of Article 7 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU, arguing gov't policy goes against the bloc's fundamental values and therefore Hungary's voting rights at the EU should be suspended.
