EUROZONE MAY RETAIL TRADE -2.9% Y/Y (FCST -2.7%); APR -2.9% Y/Y

  • May data saw another bleak month of eurozone retail activity, with sales again stalling on the month, slightly weaker than the marginal +0.2% m/m uptick anticipated by consensus.
  • A fourth consecutive slide in food sales led the decline at -0.5% m/m, followed by -0.3% m/m for auto fuels. Non-food sales rose a minor +0.1% m/m.
  • May sales were down -2.9% y/y, holding pace with the April contraction.
  • Looking forward, eurozone consumer confidence improved by 1.3pp in June, after edging up 0.1pp in May. Improving economic sentiment and a sharp decline in consumer price expectations underpinned this.
  • Despite a small improvement in consumer major purchases intentions, the indicator remains below average, implying consumer demand and retail spending is likely to remain pressured over the next months.
