Road Fuel Demand Increases in Italy and France but Jet Sales Lag 2019 Levels

Oil product consumption of transport diesel and gasoline in Italy increased in March and holding above pre covid levels while France road fuel sales also increased.

  • Total oil product sales in Italy were relatively unchanged from March 2022 at 4.315m tons and compared to of 4.34m tons in March 2019 according to ministry data.
  • Consumption of LPG and diesel/gasoil were also above March 2019 levels although jet fuel still lags by about 9% despite a 29% increase from March 2022.
  • Road fuel sales in France increased by 2.7% yr/yr in March to 4.26m cubic meters led by 6.9% higher gasoline consumption according to UFIP Energies et Mobilites. They said some panic buying occurred at fuel stations during the strikes over pension reform.
  • French Jet fuel sales increased by +4.6% to 530k cubic meters but still trailed March 2019 levels by 23%.
