Robredo Comforts Supporters As Marcos Maintains Wide Lead

PHILIPPINES

Philippine Vice President and presidential candidate Leni Robredo came close to conceding defeat, telling her supporters that it was "becoming clearer and clearer what the voice of the people is" and asking them not to give up, as early results showed that her rival Ferdinand Marcos took a comfortable lead in the presidential race.

  • With about 95% votes already counted, Marcos leads with over 30mn votes, leaving Robredo (14mn votes) far behind. These figures are based on the latest partial, unofficial tally circulated by CNN Philippines.
  • Marcos' running mate and the incumbent president's daughter Sara Duterte is on track for an even bigger win. The latest partial vote count puts her on 30.5mn votes, well ahead of runner-up Pangilinan, who got just shy of 9mn votes.
  • Crystallising landslide victories of the Marcos-Duterte tandem come as no surprise after their consistent outperformance in pre-election opinion polls.
