RTRS-Gov't Approves Energy Saving Measures To Curb Gas Usage

GERMANY

Reuters reporting that the German gov't has this morning approved measures indented to reduce the country's gas usage come winter. Measures include limiting the use of lighting in public spaces said Economy Minister and Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck, from the environmentalist Greens.

  • Habeck: "Overall the measures save energy. However, not to the extent that we can sit back and say, 'That'll do now'...[the measures] will roughly reduce gas usage by 2.0-2.5%"
  • Reuters also reports the Cabinet's approval for legislation to go forward to the Bundestag prioritising energy transport on the German railways.
  • Habeck's announcement comes as Chancellor Olaf Scholz returns from a three-day visit to Canada. There, he and Canadian PM Justin Trudeau sought to reach agreements on supporting one another's decarbonisation efforts in the years ahead, but also crucially Scholz sought to breach the prospect of importing LNG from Canada to aid with diversifying from Russian gas in the short term.
