RUSSIA-Johnson, Putin Hold Call, Discuss COP26, UK-Russia Relations, Ukraine

UK

Downing St. spox issues press release that states PM Boris Johnson held a call earlier today with Russian President Vladimir Putin (image below), discussing topics including COP26, Afghanistan, Ukraine, Iran, and the state of Russo-British relations.

  • Relations between Moscow and London have been poor for a number of years, with the attempted murder of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal in Salisbury, England in 2018 resulting in a major deterioration.
  • Putin and Johnson have not met face-to-face since Johnson became UK PM in mid-2019. In June, UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said that a summit between the two could be possible if the Russian gov't ceased its 'malign activity'.
