RUSSIA: Putin, Bennett Discuss Syria In Marathon Sochi Meeting

ISRAEL

Russian President Vladimir Putin hosts his first in-person meeting with Israeli PM Naftali Bennett in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi. Meeting between the two lasted 5 hours, with situation in Syria believed to be the major topic of discussion.

  • Barak Ravid at Walla News tweets: "Russian President Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Bennett agreed to maintain previous bilateral understandings regarding Israeli military operations in Syria, Minister Zeev Elkin who attended the meeting said"
  • Jason Brodsky, Iran International: "Bennett is trying to showcase more continuity than change given Bibi's "special relationship" with Putin. Nevertheless, this is noteworthy because of reports that Russia had voiced concern to Washington over the increasing number of Israeli attacks in Syria some months ago."
  • While not close allies, Israel and Russia have sought to avoid any form of direct confrontation in or around Syria in recent years. Appears that Bennett is keen to maintain the cordial relations his predecessor Benjamin Netanyahu held with Putin.
