Russia Suspended From UN Human Rights Council, China Votes w/Russia

The UN General Assembly has voted to suspend Russia's membership of the UN Human Rights Council following its actions in the invasion of Ukraine.

  • Of the 193 UN members, 93 voted in favour of Russia's suspension, 24 against, with 54 abstentions and 22 not voting. Of those casting a decision ballot (in favour or against), two-thirds were required to vote in favour for Russia's suspension to be approved. With 117 countries casting a decisive ballot, the threshold for suspension stood at 78.
  • Nations voting against: Russia, Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Burundi, Central African Republic, China, Congo, Cuba, North Korea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Mali, Nicaragua, Syria, Takijistan, Uzbekistan, Zimbabwe.
  • On the previous UNGA vote condemning Russia's invasion China abstained, rather than siding with Russia.
