Russian Ambassador To UK: Use Of Nuclear Weapons "Out Of The Question"

RUSSIA

Russian ambassador to the UK Andrey Kelin has told Christiane Amanpour of CNN that the prospect of Russia using nuclear weapons is out of the question.

  • Kelin: “Russia is not going to use nukes. It is out of the question."
  • Amanpour said, "[Kelin] told me in an exclusive interview, on a day when Russia is conducting military nuclear training drills. Is it off the table, I asked? “Yes, I am saying that.”"
  • Kelin says Russian strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure are in retaliation for the Ukrainian attack on the Kerch bridge in Crimea which Kelin says Kyiv knew was a "red line" in the conflict.
  • Kelin. “We are not targeting civilian infrastructure but energy is important for everyone. We are not trying to damage civilian population because we need good relations with them."
  • On "dirty bomb" allegations, Kelin says: "We have very serious information that something is under preparation. It might be a "dirty bomb" so we are just passing that information on."
  • On motivation for Ukraine to use a "dirty bomb" within their own territory, Kelin says: "We have a feeling the authorities in Kyiv need to attract attention."
