Russian Gas Flows To China Rise Amid New Agreements

Russian gas flows to China via the Power of Siberia pipeline have risen since mid-November, when both countries signed an additional agreement wither increases in flows expected from 2024, Gazprom said, cited by Interfax.

  • During a meeting in Beijing on Thursday between Gazprom and CNPC both parties stated that shipments via the eastern route are proceeding reliably and both sides are preparing to the planned increase of flows in 2024.
  • The parties also discussed a promising project for gas shipments from Russia to China through Mongolia.
  • Gazprom and CNPC have a 30-year gas purchase and sale agreement via the Power of Siberia gas pipeline for 38bcm of gas per year as of December 2019. The parties signed an additional agreement for additional volumes though the end of 2023.
  • Both sides also signed a purchase and sales agreement in February 20202 along the Far Eastern route which will deliver an increase of 10bcm of gas supplies to China once the project reaches full capacity.
  • A Russian delegation led by Deputy PM Alexander Novak is currently visiting Beijing until 16 December to participate in the 20th meeting of the Russian Chinese intergovernmental commission on energy cooperation, according to TASS.
