S. Africa Changes Election Law, SARB Gov Kganyago To Speak

  • The National Assembly passed the controversial Electoral Matters Amendment Bill, which (among others) changes the way state funds are allocated to political parties, making it more dependent on their size in parliament. Some have pointed to an outside chance that potential court challenges could result in a delay to the May 29 polls, albeit this scenario is considered unlikely.
  • Deputy President Paul Mashatile says that the government had no regrets regarding its genocide case against Israel, arguing that many states who were initially critical of the initiative have now changed their views.
  • Due to the loss of three generating units and the delay in returning a further three generating units to service, Eskom ramped up loadshedding and will not alternate between Stages 2 and 3.
