SOUTH AFRICA
  • Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) Director-General Zane Dangor announced that South Africa is looking to amend the law on arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC). Radio 702 reported that this will be done by domesticating Article 98 to grant immunity to visiting heads of state and other foreign officials. The move is intended to save South Africa a repeat of the embarrassing situation surrounding Russian President Vladimir Putin cancelled trip to the country for the upcoming BRICS summit.
  • In an exclusive report, BusinessDay said that South Africa has asked the US to consider an early extension to the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). The news outlet cited Trade, Industry & Competition Minister Ebrahim Patel as noting that the expedited renewal of the deal would provide more certainty and encourage additional investment on the continent. South Africa has been wary of losing the trade benefits associated with its AGOA status after a group of US lawmakers asked the White House to reconsider its membership due to its stance on the war in Ukraine.
