SA Refers Israel To ICC, FinMin Godongwana To Return To Work Next Week

  • President Cyril Ramaphosa said that South Africa referred Israel to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for an investigation of alleged war crimes committed during the ongoing war between the country and Hamas. Speaking during his state visit to Doha, the leader reaffirmed his support for a two-state solution and called for a ceasefire. BusinessDay reported that the ruling African National Congress (ANC) is expected to support a motion tabled by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to close the Israeli embassy in South Africa.
  • The National Treasury said that Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana will return to work next week after undergoing a "routine medical checkup in hospital". Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa will continue to stand in for Godongwana until his return next Wednesday.
  • Minister Ramokgopa told lawmakers that performance bonuses have been introduced at Eskom to boost staff morale. He suggested that the measures have helped improve the performance of the units.
  • Bank of America wrote that the SARB has likely reached the end of its hiking cycle. They now see the central bank cutting rates by 50bp next year and 75bp in 2025.
