JET FUEL: SAF to be 7% of Jet Fuel Mix by 2050: BNEF

SAF is seen rising to 7% of jet fuel demand by 2050 to 830k b/d, according to BNEF’s Energy Transition Scenario.

  • BNEF has upgraded this from 6.3% in the previous outlook, supported by new adoption policies.
  • Europe is seen as the region with the largest increase in anticipated SAF blend compared to the previous outlook, rising to 15.7% by 2050, compared to 10% previously.
  • Despite the EU mandates for adoption and introducing synthetic fuels, BNEF do not forecast that Europe will hit its target of 70% SAF by 2030.
  • There have been significant policy developments in other regions, namely APAC and Latam, BNEF added.
  • These include Singapore’s SAF target of 1% in 2026, and Brazil mandate for a 10% reduction in domestic aviation emissions using SAF by 2037.
  • new production is set to greatly boost supply, with several large projects completed in 2024 from producers like: Phillips 66, Neste, Diamond Green Diesel and Repsol, BNEF added.
