Sanchez Officially Re-Elected As PM By 179-171 Votes

SPAIN

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has officially been re-elected following a successful investiture vote in the Congress of Deputies. Sanchez' won an overall majority with 179 votes in favour in the 350-member chamber, compared to 171 votes against. As we have noted in recentbullets, while Sanchez's re-election could offer some short-term stability in that the gov't is no longer sitting in a caretaker capacity, its very narrow majority and the wide spread of ideologies represented by the parties backing Sanchez could lead to difficulty in policy making.

  • Moreover, the opposition continues to protest vocally against the amnesty deal reached between Sanchez and pro-Catalan independence parties that sees those involved in the illegal 2017 independence referendum given amnesty in exchange for pro-independence parties backing Sanchez. Opponents argue the deal goes against Spain's legal institutions and frameworks.
