Sanchez Investiture Vote Confirmed For 15 & 16 November

SPAIN

Speaker of the Congress of Deputies Francina Armengol has confirmed that the investiture vote for acting PM Pedro Sanchez will take place on 15 and 16 November. Sanchez will make a speech to the Congress at 1200CET (0600ET, 1100GMT) on 15 Nov, which will then be followed by addresses from other party leaders and a debate before lawmakers vote on the investiture the following day on 16 Nov. The vote comes after the agreement reached last week between Sanchez's centre-left PSOE and the hard-line Catalan separatist Together for Catalonia (Junts), which sees those associated with the illegal 2017 independence referendum given amnesty in exchange for backing Sanchez's investiture.

  • The deal has sparked notable public anger, with anestimated 80k protesting in Madrid over the weekend in demonstrations attended by conservative People's Party (PP) leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo, who stated that "We will not shut up until there are new elections. What is being done now is the contrary of what [Spaniards] voted for."
  • The new Sanchez gov't is likely to prove vulnerable to political instability, given its narrow majority in the Congress of Deputies and reliance on parties with starkly different policy stances with regards to regional devolution/independence.
