Santos Scandal Threatens To Shrink Republican House Majority

US

House Republicans are facing a tough decisions regarding the future of Rep-elect George Santos, an incoming New York Congressman, who has been accused of fabricating elements of his personal and professional life on the campaign trail.

  • Fox News writes: "Republicans begin with a scant 222-212 [House majority] over the Democrats... because the GOP margin is so thin, it’s far from clear that Republicans will coalesce around House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy [R-CA], to become Speaker when the new Congress starts January 3rd."
  • The Santos scandal further complicates McCarthy's path to the Speaker's gavel and might inform a decision to censure the rep-elect.
  • The Washing Post reports: "Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly (R) on Wednesday announced that she was opening an investigation into Santos for “the numerous fabrications and inconsistencies associated” with him that “are nothing short of stunning.”"
  • Donnelly added: “No one is above the law, and if a crime was committed in this county, we will prosecute it.”
  • Another NY GOP Rep-elect Nick LaLota said that the House Ethics Committee should investigate Santos.
