Sassoli Hospitalised Ahead Of Vote To Pick New President

EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT

European Parliament President David Sassoli has been hospitalised in Italy, with the vote in the Parliament to replace him as president due to take place during next week's plenary session.

  • Sassoli's spokesman confirmed that the president had been in hospital in Italy since 26 December due to the abnormal functioning of his immune system, and that all presidential activities had been cancelled during this period.
  • MEPs are set to elect Sassoli's replacement as Parliament President next week, with Maltese MEP Roberta Metsola from the centre-right European People's Party (EPP) a strong favourite for the job having gained the support of her EPP and the centre-left Socialists and Democrats (S&D) group.
  • In exchange for supporting Metsola's candidacy, the S&D are - according to Politico - demanding that Klaus Welle be ousted as Secretary-General of the European Parliament. Welle is viewed with suspicion on the left as an experienced political 'fixer' for the EPP. He haas served in the powerful position since 2009.
