Scholz And Von Der Leyen Launch 'RePower EU' Initiative

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen have delivered a joint presser with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen at the North Sea Summit in Denmark pledging investment in green initiatives to drive the transition to clean energy and relieve EU dependence on Russian energy.

  • The presser can be watched here:
  • Von der Leyen says the initiative 'RePower EU' 'will drive the transition to clean energy by setting clear and high targets for renewable energy, removing bottlenecks to investments, and, leveraging and de-risking private investment.'
  • Filipa Ramalho of the EU Commission: 'The EU is stepping up Europe's energy security and independence. The REPowerEU Plan will rapidly reduce our dependence on Russian fossil fuels, and fast forward the green transition.'
  • The EU Commission press release on the initiative can be found here:
  • The initiative proposes an additional LNG terminal in Brunsbüttel, Germany.
  • The EU Commission statement on European LNG supply: 'The EU has been working with international partners to diversify supplies for several months, and has secured record levels of LNG imports and higher pipeline gas deliveries.
