Wires reporting that French President Emmanuel Macron will travel to Berlin for talks with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Tuesday 25 January for talks likely to focus on the escalating situation on the Ukrainian border.

  • Scholz has trodden a fine-line on the Ukraine situation, stating that Russia will face significant sanctions in the event of an incursion but refusing to categorically confirm that the Nord Stream II gas pipeline will be halted should an invasion occur.
  • Macron has previously decried the functioning of the NATO alliance, instead advocating for the EU to become more 'strategically autonomous' in defence and security matters. However, the current crisis seems to be showing the continued divisions between EU members on how to counter Russian aggression towards Ukraine.
