Schumer-'Clean, Bipartisan' Senate Bill Only Way To Avoid Default

Speaking on the Senate floor, majority leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) states that the Democrat position on the debt limit 'remains the same', that there is a need for "a clean bipartisan bill to avert default." Says that "[House Speaker] McCarthy is giving us two terrible options: Either default on the debt or default on our country with steep, severe ,devastating cuts to things like law enforcement, families, teachers"

  • Says that Republican demands on budget negotiations tied into the debt ceiling belongs in the Appropriations Committee rather than in "a default crisis that now stares us in the face".
  • Schumer gives a second reading to a debt limit bill with no spending cuts attached. Does not give any timetable for a possible Senate vote on this legislation.
