Schumer Says "World Is Watching" As Congress Gridlocked Over Supplemental

US

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has stated on X that, "Democrats are committed to working to pass a national security supplemental package."

  • Schumer warns: "It’s a matter of the highest urgency," adding that, "the world is watching how the US will respond to the crises in Europe, the Middle East, and the growing tensions in the Indo-Pacific."
  • President Biden's ~USD£110bln supplemental request, which includes funding for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, is currently stalled in Senate negotiations, contingent on a comprehensive overhaul of US-Mexico border policy.
  • Optimism that Senate negotiators could announce a border policy framework this week have cooled since yesterday. GOP negotiator Senate James Lankford (R-OK), who expressed optimism on Sunday that a framework could be unveiled imminently, told reporters yesterday, “there's too many unanswered issues.”
  • Democrat negotiator Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) told reporters, “many of us warned that it’s not a good idea to condition the salvation of Ukraine and Europe on our ability to craft a comprehensive immigration reform. Period.”
  • We noted in today's edition of the MNI US Daily Brief that issues of contention are presidential asylum authority and an House impeachment process against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas which is expected to kick off tomorrow and put the lower chamber further at odds with the Senate.
