SCOTUS Strikes Down Biden's USD430bn Student Debt Relief Plan

US

In a blow to a key policy for the Biden White House, the US Supreme Court has ruled that the proposed student debt relief programme, which could have seen USD10/20k of debt per student wiped away, is not legal. The plan would have seen up to a total of USD430bn in student debtwiped out. SCOTUS ruled that the first challenge to the plan had no standing, but that the challenge from the state of Missouri did have standing, and that the court agrees with the states that the HEROES Act does not authorize the debt forgiveness plan.

  • The Hill: "Regardless of the court’s decision, borrowers will have to be ready for the three-year student loan payment hiatus to come to an end. While advocates were hopeful they could get Biden to implement another extension, especially if the court ruled against his relief, the president has locked the door on the option."
  • The 6-3 conservative-heavy split on the SCOTUS bench made the decision against debt relief less of a surprise given the court's recent inclination to rule against liberal policies in the areas of abortion, affirmative action, and LGBT rights. The vote on the second ruling split along ideological lines, 6-3.
