Seat Projection Shows LDP And Allies Set For Majority In Tokyo Election

JAPAN

The latest seat projection from Mainichi shows Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) likely to win a plurality of seats in Sunday's prefectural election in Tokyo. Alongside its ally, the Komeito party it looks set to win an overall majority in the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly.

  • Japan (Tokyo Metropolis), Mainichi seat projection: LDP (Conservative): 50 (+27), Japanese Communist Party (Left): 21 (+2), Constitutional Democratic Party (Centre-left): 18 (new), Komeito (Centre-right): 17 (-6), Tomin First: 16 (-39). +/- vs. 2017 election. Fieldwork: 26 June 2021.
  • A strong result for the LDP could provide a timely boost for Suga just ahead of the capital's controversial Olympic Games (a significant proportion of the population remains opposed to the hosting of the games).
  • However, it is important to note that given Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike ran with the support of the LDP in the 2020 gubernatorial race, a strong result for the party on Sunday could easily reflect as well on her as the prime minister.
