Second Preference In GOP Presidential Primary May Benefit DeSantis

US

The Washington Post has reported that despite former President Donald Trump’s clear early advantage in primary polling, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) still has a pathway to the GOP nomination.

  • WaPo cites a poll from J.L. Partners in New Hampshire suggesting that DeSantis may receive a boost when the primary field narrows and the second preference of Republican voters are taking into account.
  • “...Trump leads the field with 51 percent of the vote when facing many potential contenders, with his top rival, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, winning 18 percent and New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu coming in third at 10 percent. But when limited to a one-on-one race with DeSantis, Trump’s lead shrinks to 20 points, or 53 percent to 33 percent with the remainder undecided.”
  • Betting markets continue to see DeSantis as an unlikely prospect, at this stage. Data for Smarkets shows that the gap has steadily widened between Trump and DeSantis during 2023 with Trump attributed a 62% implied probability of winning compared to 25% for DeSantis.
