Second Speaker Ballot Expected After Jordan Drops 20 Votes

US

Republican speaker nominee Jim Jordan (R-OH) has failed to secure the speaker's gavel in a first roll call on the House floor.

  • Bullet edited to correct Hern to Emmer 19:04 BST
  • The final vote tally: Jordan 200, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) 212. Others 20, Present 0. It should be noted that several reps declined to vote suggesting that the actual 'noe' vote may be higher than 20.
  • Republican rebels variously voted for former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), last week's nominee Steve Scalise (R-LA), former Republican rep Lee Zeldin, and Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN).
  • A second speaker vote is now expected shortly. Ahead of the first vote, several Republican reps indicated that they would vote for Jordan in the first round and switch their vote if he failed to secure the gavel. If the vote count widens the gap, then Republican leadership may push to recess and re-evaluate Jordan's candidacy.
  • Rebels failed to nominate an alternate candidate in the first round. In the next round, a rep may choose to nominate Emmer as a formal candidate giving rebels a more credible base to build opposition to Jordan.
