Section 89 Procedure Begins This Week, But Unlikely to Make Major Progress

SOUTH AFRICA
Section 89 procedure (removal of President) now underway in South Africa, with the panel investigating the Phala Phala farm scandal

  1. Independent panel has 30 days to judge whether there is sufficient evidence to proceed with inquiry
  2. If yes, Impeachment Committee investigates and makes recommendation to National Assembly
  3. The House then schedules a debate among lawmakers on the report's findings
  4. The impeachment question is put to a vote among lawmakers
  5. If two-thirds of members support impeachment, President is removed (bear in mind ANC has 230 seats, 57.5% of lawmakers, so this is steep ask)

Step 1 has begun, as of this week.
