US State Department Spokesperson Vedant Patel has confirmed that the US will not change its policy on providing weapons to Israel after sufficient steps were taken to address concerns over a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, laid out by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin in October.
- Axios notes: "Blinken has decided that there will be no change for now to military assistance to Israel following the [30 day] deadline ... two U.S. officials said. The officials said Israel has taken important steps to address the U.S. concerns regarding the humanitarian situation in Gaza..."
- Patel: "We at this time have made an assessment that the Israelis are not in violation of US law... we are going to continue to watch how these steps ... are being implemented..."
- Separately, US President-Elect Donald Trump has nominated former governor of Arkansas Mike Huckabee to be US Ambassador to Israel.Trump said in a statement that Huckabee, “loves Israel, and the people of Israel, and likewise, the people of Israel love him. Mike will work tirelessly to bring about Peace in the Middle East!”
- In June, Huckabee argued against the Biden administration pursuing a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Huckabee told NewsNation: “Well, there’s no valid reason to have a cease-fire with Hamas. They’re not capable of having an honorable negotiation...” Huckabee added: “This is like trying to negotiate with the Nazis in World War II. You just don’t. You beat them. You defeat them. You eradicate them."
