Sefcovic: EU Will Not Renegotiate NI Protocol

EU-UK

European Commission VP Maros Sefcovic has issued a statement saying that the EU will not renegotiate the protocol despite today's 'command paper' from the UK gov't calling for just that.

  • "The EU has sought flexible, practical solutions to overcome the difficulties citizens in Northern Ireland are experiencing regarding the implementation of the Protocol."
  • "We will continue to engage with the UK, also on the suggestions made today. We are ready to continue to seek creative solutions, within the framework of the Protocol, in the interest of all communities in Northern Ireland. However, we will not agree to a renegotiation of the Protocol."
  • Sefcovic's statement not a surprise, with the EU frequently stating that the Withdrawal Agreement is a finalised document that cannot be re-written.
  • Relations now come down to a staring match up until end-Sep, when grace period on GB-NI chilled meat trade expires. Either UK will unilaterally withdraw from protocol, invoke Art.16, acquiesce to continued customs checks, or the EU will allow a renegotiation.
