Sefcovic: Political Goodwill Could Lead To Solutions On NI Protocol

EU-UK

EU Commission VP Maros Sefcovic and UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss have issued a joint statement following their recently-concluded meeting in Brussels (link here). The two are attempting to reach an agreement on the disputed Northern Ireland protocol.

  • While light on details, the statement did confirm that the EU-UK Joint Committee would meet in February. This will mark the first time the Committee has met since June 2021.
  • In a presser after the meeting, Sefcovic stated that, ‘If political goodwill is maintained our discussions could lead to a timely solution that would immediately & significantly help operators on the ground’. Says that the EU will not lay down ‘artificial deadlines’ but instead will ‘act with sense of urgency’.
  • Had been assumptions that the EU wanted negotiations finished by March so that the talks do not become an issue in the May Northern Ireland Assembly election. However, this assumption may have been set aside by Sefocivc's 'deadlines' comment.
