EU-UK

Lisa O'Carroll at The Guardian tweets comments from EU Commission Exec VP Maros Sefcovic's address to the EU-UK Forum:

  • "Sefcovic: "Let's be honest, we are addressing challenges created by Brexit and type of Brexit, chosen by the UK govt. Therefore, negotiating the protocol is unrealistic ... having said that, the EU has shown from beginning, genuine understanding for the practical difficulties implementing the protocol."
  • "The UK approach makes the current and acceptable situation regarding the lack of implementation of the protocol even worse, Such unilateral action is quite simply illegal. It is a breach of international law, and it is extremely damaging to mutual trust and respect between the EU and the UK. And it is not for London to unilaterally change the game and decide what enters the EU single market. "
  • "But while I can bring as many solutions to the table as possible, I cannot bring political will on someone else's behalf"
  • Says that the Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) - the FTA between the EU and UK - can never be a replacement for membership of the EU.
